Organic gin: what the certification really means
No blanket claims. Here is exactly what is certified.
What does EU certified organic mean?
A spirit may only be called organic if every agricultural ingredient comes from certified organic farming and the distillery itself is inspected. The code on the label shows who inspects: DE stands for Germany, ÖKO for organic production, the number for the inspection body. Our Munich Dry Gin has carried that certification since 2008, one of the first organic gins in Germany.
The code on our labels
You will find DE-ÖKO-007 on every certified bottle. It is not a marketing seal we award ourselves: the certification belongs to the products listed below, and only to them.

And these are not
Just as important: La Duchessa classic, La Duchessa Bartender Edition, Entgeistert, tonic water, the gift baskets, tours, distilling courses and merchandise carry no organic certification. They are good products, they are simply not certified, and we do not pretend otherwise.
What it means for the gin
Juniper, coriander, angelica, lavender and the Bavarian pair hop blossom and malt: for the Munich Dry Gin, all 13 botanicals come from organic farming. That is a purchasing decision we renew every year, and it costs more than the conventional route. You can taste it, and you can check it.

Which THE DUKE products are organic?
Certified organic are the THE DUKE gins, Lion's Vodka, the FuchsDeifesWuid liqueurs, the Münchner Kümmel, La Duchessa non-alcoholic, the canned long drinks Gin & Tonic and Moscow Mule and the miniature set. Every other product carries no organic claim.
What does DE-ÖKO-007 mean?
DE stands for Germany, ÖKO for organic production, 007 identifies the inspection body that checks the certified goods. The code has to appear next to the organic claim, which is why you find it on the label.
Is every gin from THE DUKE organic?
Yes, all our gins are certified. The certification does not extend to the rest of the range: aperitivo, tonic water, merchandise, tours and courses are not certified.
Why is Entgeistert not organic?
Entgeistert is our alcohol-free alternative. It is distilled with the same care, but it does not carry the organic certification, so we do not claim it.
